Incredible turnout at spoc tonight. Well over 200 public (most now in line for the Clark). Many, many scopes and perfect weather.

To the SLASers at SPOC this evening: Do you think the event was *too* well attended? I mentioned 200 public in my earlier email but that was at the beginning, shortly after sunset. Considering how packed the parking lot was, how many people were in some of the lines (over 150 in one line) and reports from others who counted later, it's starting to look like the total could have been 400+. It's obvious that SLAS's new marketing guru Ryan Simpkins has done a great job of getting the word out (thank you Ryan). And I look forward to seeing how many show up at the next General Membership meeting. From what I heard at Advanced Training the were no complaints from the public about the Disneyland-like long lines but I did feel bad for those who stood in lines for so long. Assuming tonight was not a fluke, should we maybe think about working harder to get more members out there with scopes (not quite 20 tonight)? Or come up with other ideas for handling such crowds? Any general comments about tonight? patrick
My estimate is in the 500 range. We have never had a star-party like that at SPOC. There were lines for every telescope. On Jun 27, 2015 9:42 PM, "Patrick" <paw@digis.net> wrote:

The sprinklers were turned on and several angry people had their expensive equipment doused with water. That is the main reason that some members have vowed to never bring a telescope to a SPOC star party. We can't seem to solve this problem. Agreed. At least for a non-special event (attendance at the Mars parties in 2003 was even bigger). Now the question is will the trend continue or was last night a fluke? patrick

After putting a great deal of personal effort in to the promotion of SLAS, I sincerely hope it is no fluke. That said, we did have a few things stack up all at once that boosted us a little higher. We can discuss the details at the next board meeting, if anyone is interested. This isn't a SLAS business mailing list. I'll stop here and simply say: There has never been a better time to consider outreach astronomy as a fun and engaging activity. You can do this if you are part of SLAS or not. It can be very rewarding. -Ryan
I hope it continues but if we don't come to an understanding with Stansbury then we may have to break down at 11:00 no matter the crowd. The water coming on was a disaster for some. Levi and Tony experienced water on their equipment. That was not good. We're there only 2 days a month. I would think an accommodation could be reached for two days. It really needs to be pointed out that Rodger turned off the sprinkler system when he arrived at SPOC. Later during the star party someone inexplicably turned the system back on! (I sure hope by accident and not someone trying to cause trouble and then complain about it.) So not the park's fault. No amount of talking to the park is going to help if one of our own goes in and turns the sprinklers on. BTW, Rodger is going to purchase items to cover the sprinkler heads "just in case". patrick On 29 Jun 2015, at 14:11, Siegfried Jachmann <siegfried@jachmann.org> wrote:

This message from Dan Holmes didn't make it through the mailman software for some reason, but I feel it's important to the discussion, so I'm resending it myself. It seems to me that if Dan could barely push it down with his entire body weight, a paving block won't do the job. Also wouldn't the pavers be a potential tripping hazard in the dark? Also, is the valve/switch, whatever it is, clearly marked as to "off" and "on" positions? Is it accessible to anyone who might walk up to it? Where is it? We're going to start putting heavy, concrete pavers over the potentially offending sprinkler heads before each star party. As long as the heads can't pop up they can't spray.

Hi Chuck and Bruce, Not sure about the pressure question. I put a paver on one of the heads and that seemed to work. But if not we can go back to putting an inverted bucket over the heads and a paver on top of each bucket. As for the switch (it is an electric switch, not a plumbing valve), the switch itself was labeled (up on, down off) but it was not obvious. More obvious markings have since been added. patrick On 30 Jun 2015, at 09:07, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

I would opt for a locking cover to be installed before the star party, and then removed afterwards and stored for later usage. With a crowd like was there, there is always going to be a joker who thinks it would be fun if the sprinklers were turned on, oblivious to the consequences. 73
I went over to SPOC tonight and waited for the sprinklers to come on so I could see if pavers alone will suffice. But of course since there were no telescopes present the sprinklers never came on. Will try again tomorrow. patrick On 30 Jun 2015, at 14:34, Wiggins Patrick <paw@digis.net> wrote:

What about sticking red traffic safety cones over the sprinkler heads to allow safe removal of equipment should they come on. Several could be purchase for about $100. Get the kind that don't have a hole on top or tape the hole. If some glow tape were put on them they could be seen at night. Even if an agreement is made with the Park people there can always be a slip up. The best solution would be to install a shutoff valve (our a key to the control box) that could be turned off during a star party and turned back on after everyone has left. -----Original Message----- From: Utah-Astronomy [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Siegfried Jachmann Sent: Monday, June 29, 2015 2:12 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Wow!
