Does anyone know of a 12-inch light box for sale, either locally or from some manufacturer? I'm tired to taking flats in the morning when I should be sleeping. Thanks, Joe
Hi Joe, You may want to consider a Spike-A Flat fielder light box. They have a version for up to 12" scopes for $230 or a version that will work with scopes up to 16" for $350. Here is a link to it: http://www.spike-a.com/flatfielders/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwyIyqBRD4janGs5e67IsBEiQAo... It uses edge lit LEDs to give even illumination (to 1%). They also sell a USB controlled dimmer that you can add ($120) to give more brightness levels and it should help with repeatability. http://www.spike-a.com/USBDimmer/ I purchased their 16" light box for my 14" Edge HD a little while ago - but I've been too busy to really put it through it's paces yet. I am a teacher at a school in Ogden Utah. We are taking a group of 8th and 9th graders on a camping trip for a couple nights next week in the Arches NP. I am curious if there is anyone in the area willing to bring by some telescopes and show the students a thing or 2. I find that the fascination is really high at this age level, but their experience is very low. I am not looking for anything in particular, just the opportunity to be exposed to some great astronomy the way one should be, in Southern Utah on a camping trip. If you have any interest in helping, I would please let me know. We will be there from May 11-14th. The evening of the 12th would probably work the best, however that is definitely something we can work around the other 2 nights. If you are interested, please shoot me a message at shayman@ogdenprep.org<mailto:shayman@ogdenprep.org>. Thanks in advance. Sam
Joe, next time I see you at a meeting I'll describe my technique. Basically I hang a piece of white cardboard in front of the scope and illuminate it with light reflected off another light color surface. And remember that as long as you do not remove the camera from the scope or make any huge changes in focus a given flat can be used for many sessions. patrick On 01 May 2015, at 19:41, Joe Bauman via Utah-Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

I went to Zion with Sam's group a couple of years ago and we had a great time. If any of you are thinking about it, I highly recommend this. It's a great outreach to younger people - a group we're all talking about trying to get involved in astronomy - and it's pretty fun. The group I worked with (along with Dave Gary and John DuCrest from St. George) were very enthusiastic and remarkably well-mannered kids. If you're looking for an excuse to spend a couple of days at Arches with your telescope, this is one you should consider. Joe, Carol recently bought a light box by Mono price MO in 0PR I CE 18.8" x 14.2" by point 0.3 inch. Either from Amazon or eBay. She got it at half price for around $65, she thinks. Actually, you could email Dan, because he was the one that found it. 73 Sent from my iPad
