Spring 2008 Rainbow Hunting Calendar - Salt Lake City
Spring 2008 Rainbow Hunting Calendar - Salt Lake City - March to May http://members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/plan/rainbowhunt/RainbowHun... Printable rainbow calendar graphic http://members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/plan/rainbowhunt/img/Rainbo... The spring is a good time for rainbow hunting in Salt Lake City because of the interaction between weather and the Wasatch Mountains. Rain storms come from the west off the Pacific Ocean and are blocked by and pile up against the north-south trending Wasatch Mountains. This creates a band of light rain sheets along the east bench of the Salt Lake Valley. The western sky can be partly cloudy or clear, while the eastern sky is under a cloud deck. When the Sun is low in the southwest sky, the Sun streams under the eastern cloud deck and strikes rain sheets. These are favorable conditions for the formation of rainbows. The website and graphic calendar lists favorable times when rainbows might be seen in Salt Lake City during the prime spring months of March, April and May. The webpage is suitable for scout groups and school children and includes a SafeSurf pics rating code. Although not applicable to other areas of the country, it suggests how similar a rainbow hunt calendar can be generated by local astronomy clubs, particularized for their region. - Kurt ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Do people actually hunt these? Do you have to sneak up on 'em? Can you just sit in your favorite tree stand and wait for these to come by? Surely someone must regulate this activity. Where does one get a permit? Is there a bag limit? What do they taste like? Quoting Canopus56 <canopus56@yahoo.com>:

It's the Pot'O'Gold they hunt for. The limit is how much gold you can carry.

I remember Merle Haggard did a song about "Eating that rainbow stew." Of course that was probably back when there was an abundance of free roaming rainbows. If I could just turn back the hands of time... Quoting Josephine Grahn <bsi@xmission.com>:

Kurt , Thank you for collecting and calculating the information and posting it. I really do enjoy viewing a rainbow. I would also like to try and get some decent rainbow photos sometime. I believe it was Rob that had mentioned previously that a big part of getting a good photo is knowing where to stand. Do you or other list members have suggestions of a favorite location to view/photograph rainbows from, in the Salt Lake Valley? It was just in the last week or so (Monday I believe) as I was leaving work I noted that exact type of conditions you mention that should be favorable for a rainbow to be visible (sunny at my location on the west side, while still raining in the east side of the valley). Looking toward the anti-solar point I was able to see a nice section of rainbow. While I enjoyed that view, it occurred to me that although I understood the general principals of rainbow formation I was not as clear on the specifics as a card carrying member of the Optical Society of America ought to be, particularly with regard to the formation of secondary rainbows. I thought if I were asked to explain it to a school class or other group I might find myself clearing my throat and stammering quite a bit and vowed to sitdown and do a ray tracing diagram to make sure I was clear myself on what was going on. Thanks for including the Descartes figure. Wikipedia has a good article on the phenomena. Including a ray diagram of the double reflection that leads to the secondary rainbows and an explanation of supernumerary rainbows. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow Ivo --- Canopus56 <canopus56@yahoo.com> wrote:
