You don't have to use a ladder if it is pointed low enough, Joe. As with any alt/az telescope, there is geometry involved with how high the eyepiece height is for a given altitude that the scope is pointed.

It is reasonably well-balanced Joe, but it weighs a ton. Takes a bit of muscle to get it going. If it wasn't balanced, it wouldn't stay where you put it. But overcoming the rest mass does take energy, and you don't have the leverage of moving it by the upper, long end of the telescope. You have to move it by the short end, a much less efficient lever. It's a bit easier at the eyepiece, where the lever is a bit longer. Things move out of the field of view FAST! On Mon, Oct 21, 2013 at 1:55 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

How does he plan to get a ton on and off a trailer? A crane?

It's actually nearly two tons (3500 lbs.) The mirror alone is 900 lbs. Yes, Mike has in mind a type of small crane to move the telescope on and off a car transport type trailer. The scope disassembles, so the entire thing will not be moved on and off the trailer at once. I would also think the optics should not be hauled on the trailer, should be hauled in the truck bed. Something with shock absorbers.

I'm glad Mike is the one who wants to campaign this telescope! A 70-inch telescope is incredible, but to make it transportable simply boggles the mind. If the technical hurdles of transportation can be overcome, Mike is the guy to figure it out. If not, he'll have one heckuva home observatory down in Delta. "Surprisingly easy" is relative. It does move "easily" for a ton of rest mass. It takes more than a little bit of effort to center objects in the eyepiece. On Tue, Oct 22, 2013 at 9:38 AM, Erik Hansen <erikhansen@thebluezone.net>wrote:

Hmmm. My gmail in box isn't updated quickly as it normally does. I'm not seeing Mat's replies until after I have duplicated his answers.
No worries. Exactly the same thing has happened to me. Repeat information is not necessarily a bad thing. You're more comprehensive in your replies. I tend to be as terse as the questioner at times, especially if I'm at the office. On Tue, Oct 22, 2013 at 10:25 AM, Hutchings, Mat <mat.hutchings@siemens.com>wrote:

I remember being circle by Cobra Helicopters out at pit and pole, trying to see what the cyndrical objects were we had set up.
They'd really be all over this if Mike had an Arabic-sounding name...
