Oh, I should mention, I drive a black Nissan Pathfinder and I park in the outer parking lot just west of the Holiday/Chevron but in the Walmart Parking lot area. On 2011-03-31 13:08, Jay Eads wrote:
There will be several people out at Pit n Pole both tonight, Thursday and again on Friday. This will include visual observers and those doing astro-photography. Humidity was very high at Pit n Pole last night, in the 90% range for a majority of the night. Tonight the forecast is for lower humidity, around 65% until 2:00a.m. and then climbing to around 80% after that. So if you plan on staying late I'd have some dew heaters ready to go. Nothing new for this site. If you want to avoid the humidity you could observe up on Five Mile Pass which is up out of the muck but doesn't have as much of a open view but the skies above 25 to 30 degrees are just as good (and who looks under 25 degrees right?).
I am meeting a friend at Walmart at 5:30p.m. in Lehi at the corner of Hwy 68 and Hwy 73. We'll leave right at 5:30p.m. as we want to set up in the light and be ready go before it gets dark.
Hi, I am planning on coming tonight (Thursday). I think I can find it. (pit-n-Pole) As soon as i can get away (around 5-6 ) I will head out. See you tonight. It was too nice a day to stay on the ground so I thought I'd see if I could find Pit n Pole from the air. The Long/Lat coordinates Joe supplied were spot on so finding the place was pretty straight forward. I had not thought to bring my DSLR along so the only thing I had onboard to take pictures with was my iPhone. Here's an annotated shot: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/IMG_0037.jpg Perhaps you've heard of the Nazca Lines? Well, once I got on the ground and looked at the pictures I noticed what could pass as "Pit n Pole Lines" just to the east of the site. It looks to me like the outline of some sort of blob-like creature sneaking over to catch unknowing astronomers off guard after dark. :) patrick

The darks things are shrubs but I don't know what the light colored things are. Were they further west in the Test and Training Range I'd say bomb craters <g>. I'm guessing they are some sort of natural feature. Anyone on the list know what they are? patrick

Perhaps you've heard of the Nazca Lines? Well, once I got on the ground and looked at the pictures I noticed what could pass as "Pit n Pole Lines" just to the east of the site. It looks to me like the outline of some sort of blob-like creature sneaking over to catch unknowing astronomers off guard after dark. :)

Beautiful, Rob! Wish our weather would remain clear for a long time. Unfortunately, although tomorrow night looks good, we get some storms after that. Just got in from the Pit n Pole. I was wondering Patrick if that was you flying over . . . did you see us wave at you? Incredible shot! Two of us had just arrived when you were flying by. We had five but . . . In terms of the snails, yep, the Dugway Snails crawled and unfortunately two astronomers have disappeared . . . . No humidity tonight, no dew. A tiny bit of frost when we left at 3:00a.m. but it was just an incredible night for all. The hills. Well, there are a LOT of ant hills my mid to late summer out there. So that would work. Or perhaps Clifford the Big Red Dog is burying bones out there again. On Thu, Mar 31, 2011 at 11:58 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com>wrote:

Nothing new for this site. If you want to avoid the humidity you could observe up on Five Mile Pass which is up out of the muck but doesn't have as much of a open view but the skies above 25 to 30 degrees are just as good (and who looks under 25 degrees right?).
I am meeting a friend at Walmart at 5:30p.m. in Lehi at the corner of Hwy 68 and Hwy 73. We'll leave right at 5:30p.m. as we want to set up in the light and be ready go before it gets dark.

Here's a bit more info- taken from http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2011/31mar_springfireba lls/ Spring is Fireball Season March 31, 2011: What are the signs of spring? They are as familiar as a blooming Daffodil, a songbird at dawn, a surprising shaft of warmth from the afternoon sun. And, oh yes, don't forget the meteors. "Spring is fireball season," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Center. "For reasons we don't fully understand, the rate of bright meteors climbs during the weeks around the vernal equinox." A spring fireball recorded by a NASA all-sky camera located at the Marshall Space Flight Center on March 16, 2009. [movie] In other seasons, a person willing to watch the sky from dusk to dawn could expect to see around 10 random or "sporadic" fireballs. A fireball is a meteor brighter than the planet Venus. Earth is bombarded by them as our planet plows through the jetsam and flotsam of space--i.e., fragments of broken asteroids and decaying comets that litter the inner solar system. In spring, fireballs are more abundant. Their nightly rate mysteriously climbs 10% to 30%. "We've known about this phenomenon for more than 30 years," says Cooke. "It's not only fireballs that are affected. Meteorite falls--space rocks that actually hit the ground--are more common in spring as well1." Researchers who study Earth's meteoroid environment have never come up with a satisfactory explanation for the extra fireballs. In fact, the more they think about it, the stranger it gets. Consider the following: A NASA fireball camera at the Marshall Space Flight Center. [more] There is a point in the heavens called the "apex of Earth's way." It is, simply, the direction our planet is traveling. As Earth circles the sun, the apex circles the heavens, completing one trip through the Zodiac every year. The apex is significant because it is where sporadic meteors are supposed to come from. If Earth were a car, the apex would be the front windshield. When a car drives down a country road, insects accumulate on the glass up front. Ditto for meteoroids swept up by Earth. Every autumn, the apex climbs to its highest point in the night sky. At that time, sporadic meteors of ordinary brightness are seen in abundance, sometimes dozens per night. Read that again: Every autumn. "Autumn is the season for sporadic meteors," says Cooke. "So why are the sporadic fireballs peaking in spring? That is the mystery." Meteoroid expert Peter Brown of the University of Western Ontario notes that "some researchers think there might be an intrinsic variation in the meteoroid population along Earth's orbit, with a peak in big fireball-producing debris around spring and early summer. We probably won't know the answer until we learn more about their orbits2." To solve this and other puzzles, Cooke is setting up a network of smart meteor cameras around the country to photograph fireballs and triangulate their orbits. As explained in the Science@NASA story What's Hitting Earth?, he's looking for places to put his cameras; educators are encouraged to get involved. Networked observations of spring fireballs could ultimately reveal their origin. "It might take a few years to collect enough data," he cautions. Until then, it's a beautiful mystery. Go out and enjoy the night sky. It is spring, after all.
