Nice. Joe. BTW, yesterday, Dan took Carol and me over the old Lucin cutoff from Promontory to Wendover as part of a group of vehicles doing research on the associated ghost towns and sidings. Question: While driving South on Pilot Mtn road (which took us past the sun tunnels-- our first visit there), maybe some 20 or 30 miles North of the entrance road to the salt flats, we passed some vehicles and a motor home on a rise to the West. Was that you or Chrismo at what is called the Lakeside? site? Looking back, I wish we had stopped and asked. 73, oh Sent from my iPad

For those considering a trip to the Tunnels: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/%7Epaw/SUNTUNNELS.HTML patrick
I have had some experience with both "observing" at the sun tunnels and driving the old Central Pacific RR grade, which was eventually abandoned after construction of the Lucin Cutoff. On December 21, 1991 I went to the tunnels with VonDel Chamberlain. It was particularly interesting because there was a partial lunar eclipse the night of the 20th/21st, so the Moon was also aligned in the opposite pair of tunnels, both at sunset and sunrise. I've got pics of the event buried in a moving box - somewhere. It was a bitter cold night, at least -20F, and the only other people nuts enough to be there were some dumb college kids without warm clothing who arrived pre-dawn for the sunrise. Still, I enjoyed the experience. I also went there with the family the following June for the solstice. There were a few more people there in June. ;-) The Lucin Cutoff (the old Great Salt Lake trestle) was built because by about 1900 it had actually become cheaper than continuing to run trains over Promontory Summit. By around 1940 the rails had been removed from the UP and CP grades, roughly between Odgen and Lucin - hence, the "Lucin Cutoff". The Central Pacific grade is now maintained by the BLM and is supposedly drivable, except for bypasses at all of the wooden trestles. I've tried driving the CP grade between Lucin and Promontory on three occasions, and each time I've ripped open a tire on old RR spikes still buried in the soil on the grade. Finally, I determined one year to do the whole thing by bicycle. My plan was to stay on the grade as much as possible, even across the wooden trestles. I left Promontory in the morning one day in October and pedaled to Lucin, then from there to Montello where my wife met me, a total of about 120 miles. It took three days and about 15 liters of water, that I carried on my bike all the way, until I ran out. I saw no one else the entire trip until I was well past Lucin headed to Montello off-grade. The second night I camped at the cemetery at Terrace, but I neither saw nor heard any of the ghost trains that have been reported in the area. I only had to leave the grade once or twice to bypass missing trestles, otherwise I was able to bicycle the whole thing, even on the wooden trestles that are blocked to car traffic. It was one of the best trips to which I've ever treated myself. Fascinating history and desert scenery. Well worth the time and effort, but my joints all suffered for a few weeks afterward. Guess I'm getting old(er). Kim

Does anyone remember the year Digistar appeared at RTMC? I was looking through the RTMC archives and it is not mentioned. This was the first public demonstration of Digistar, and what is probably the first digital planetarium software written. My recollection is 1982, but that may be off by a year.
Hi Brent, I'll check my day-timer. I'm pretty sure I have it in there. Hi Brent, I checked my old daytimers (yes, I still have them) and you were right. 1982 is the only year in the period from 1980, when I started at E & S, and 1983 when I left E & S, that I recorded a trip to Riverside. What memories! Kim, some kind of trek! We did see a number of motorcycles, both coming and going. Not big harleys, but the smaller off-road types. Somewhere around 10 years ago, I made probably the most interesting sales call I have ever made. Got into a UP pickup in Ogden and drove out towards the present causeway across the Lake and got on the "high rail" and rode across the water. We had to make frequent stops, either to inspect their new communications system, or to get off the rail to let an oncoming train pass. They use old style double reed copper relays to show the trains on a board in Ogden, and then, on probably a series of boards in Omaha, that show the position of every train in the UP system. One interesting view was of a barge salvaging, by pulling, the old wooden trestle poles from the bottom of the Lake. We ended up on the West edge of the Lake, having passed Gov Norm's pumps. Been there too, but that is another story which contains details of Dan and I, with State Engineers, watching (and listening) to the Air Force bombing the side of a mountain perhaps 10 or 15 miles away. What a sight! 73, lh On 9/10/2012 9:04 AM, Kim wrote:

Thanks for the pictures, Patrick. You just cannot describe to people the lonelyness of this entire area. There is just miles and miles of the ground around the sun tunnels--top of picture #1 shows the scrub which is typical. We saw no birds, 1 very small lizard, and the Mayor of Lucin (one sheep, Merino?) who was fenced in at the ponds of Lucin. I should say pond, as the others were dry and while there was still flowing water to the main pond, it was very little. Did see some cattle when we got closer to Wendover, but no antelope, deer, or even a coyote. Main problem is water and feed, as the grass is just burnt to a straw color. This is the reason cattle ranchers have to move their herds to higher mountain range, a practice many decry. I guess the propeller guy living in his hanger must be a throwback to the old mountain men. Be a great place for an observatory, tho. Or rombics, for those of us who know that word. 73, lh On 9/9/2012 10:40 PM, Patrick Wiggins wrote:

I just set up in the parking lot of the lehman caves visitor center. i assumed the picnic area was on that road adjacent to that lot, and it didn't look too appealing to me. yesterday we toured the caves and then drove up the Wheeler Peak scenic drive. i think if i go again for personal enjoyment, i'd like to set up at Mather Overlook.
