It is with a heavy heart that I announce that long-time SLAS member DeLoy Pierce passed-away on Oct. 22. Obituary: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/deseretnews/obituary.aspx?n=deloy-glen-pier... I've known Deloy for decades, and his wife Karen when she was living. Those two were a fixture at star-parties and gatherings for many, many years. DeLoy always dressed as Santa Claus at the club "Solstice Parties". I'm going to miss the old guy. Say hi to Siegfried for us, DeLoy. Ad Astra.
Last time I saw DeLoy, he looked fine - but then so did Siegfried :( DeLoy is the person who first suggested setting up a telescope on Halloween night as a treat for all the neighborhood ghosts and goblins. He also suggested giving out Milky Way or Starbursts. I did this for over 20 years at my niece and nephew's house (they were avid Halloweeners) in Glendale. Of course parents were encouraged to look as well. It became generational when a guy came up to my C-8 with his 3 year old and said "I used to come here when I was a kid and I remember you and the telescope." Only stopped last year as they moved to Syracuse. Never had any trouble. Lots of compliments like "Thank you, my child would never have had this opportunity." It's all DeLoy's fault. DeLoy and Karen really helped me learn when I first started this hobby in 1998. They taught me to find new things at each star party. I remember DeLoy setting red ball telescope I the lap of a guest in a wheel chair at East Canyon and helping him see several things.DaveSent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone -------- Original message --------From: Joan Carman <jcarman6@q.com> Date: 10/26/18 14:36 (GMT-07:00) To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] RIP DeLoy Pierce Last time I saw DeLoy, he looked fine - but then so did Siegfried :(DeLoy is the person who first suggested setting up a telescope on Halloween night as a treat for all the neighborhood ghosts and goblins.
