Oh yeah! I'm smack in the middle of the valley and saw a one-degree long tail (about two moon diameters). The lunar glare was bothersome in my wide field 70mm refractor at about 20x, but not overwhelming. On Mar 13, 2013 9:08 PM, "Chrismo" <djchrismo@gmail.com> wrote:

I caught a tail for just a moment, then lost it in the haze and junk when I was trying to show it to my wife. Dan On Mar 13, 2013, at 9:15 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

Chuck Thanks for the report. What time did it disappear behind the mountains? Was it directly below the moon tonight? I still can't figure out where/when to look. It was about four or five moon diameters below, and slightly to the left of the moon. I lost it below the neighbor's roof at about 8:50. On Mar 13, 2013 9:24 PM, "Dion Davidson" <diondavidson@yahoo.com> wrote:

Look for the slightly fuzzy nucleus first. You can tell its not a star. It's visible before the sky gets dark. The tail is tricky, and any high cirrus really wipes it out. It requires darkness to be seen at all.
That was the problem with this comet. It was too light on the horizon so there wasn't much contrast. I hope the other one is better. On Wed, Mar 13, 2013 at 9:30 PM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

I finally found the comet between clouds low on the horizon. It was small and had a tail about a degree long. Kind of a dud if you ask me. I was looking for something bigger. Then it sank between power lines so I left. Went out to Ivins, Ut to see it. Debbie On Wed, Mar 13, 2013 at 9:22 PM, Dion Davidson <diondavidson@yahoo.com>wrote:

Definitely a dud. For most of the folks at SPOC it was a no-show, even with binocs and telescopes. But Patrick caught it in the 200 mm. refractor so I think those in line before it went behind a cloud bank must have seen it.-- Joe ________________________________ From: Debbie <astrodeb@beyondbb.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 9:29 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Any luck? I was at SPOC for my refractor refresher last night but left at 6 when it became apparent that the horizon clouds were getting thicker. I made the right move. If the clouds give us a break tonight, the comet will be much further below the moon and the tail should be easier to spot. It will be north of a line drawn from the moon straight down to the horizon. I see that the story of dead fish in the Stansbury millpond is on the KSL website today. Patrick and I noticed an unusually large seagull flock on the lake yesterday and wondered why. The dead fish buffet explains it.
