Orion has done it again. They now have an ED refractor with a 100mm aperture, priced at $999 + s&h. It looks like it has the same tube diameter as the 80mm model so can use the same rings & mount. Recall that the 80mm model uses an oversize tube, and at the time I speculated that this portended good things to come. I just hope I can get a grand together before they raise the price! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Address AutoComplete - You start. I just got my new Orion catalog yesterday. I will take a look at it. I still haven't found my perfect first scope yet. I want a fabulous view of deep sky objects, yet simple to transport, to set up, and to operate. -A
Ann, you've described a mid-sized Dobsonian, say 8" to 12.5" aperture. The refractor is too small to provide much "wow" factor on the faint fuzzies. On a small equatorial mount with motor drives though, you will really appreciate it on the planets & brighter comets, double stars, moon & sun, and the brightest of the d-s objects. The price is also much higher than a Dob. of 2 or 3 times the aperture. --- "Ann C. House" <ann@annhouse.org> wrote:

"Mid-sized"? I guess this will date me, but when I got into this astronomy stuff back in the early 70s an 8 was considered big and a 12.5 was unattainably huge. Patrick :-)
Chuck, It looks to be a great visual use scope at f/9. I confess I'm also tempted to start saving my pennies. It's certainly the best deal on a 4-inch APO by more than half. Rich --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:
