Reading over recent UA posts I see a lot of astronomy but a lot of other sciences as well. Technically anything not related to astronomy is off-topic here but with so much non-astronomy having been enthusiastically discussed here I'm wondering if maybe we should consider another name. Possibly something like Utah Science? Thoughts? Comments? patrick
Oh I don't know, some subject matter misses the topic by an astronomical amount. That should count for something. ;) One can turn ANY topic into a discussion of astronomy. I wouldn't worry much about needing to change the name. Unless you are being pressured to do so by the PC police. Quoting Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com>:

I think a name change would attract non-astronomy science enthusiasts and risk diluting the astro content to the point where I'd just drop it completely.
I agree - if that's worth anything. Yeah, no need to change the name, and I'm probably one of the worst offenders. What I'll try to do from now on, when I have a science question that bothers me and want to turn to the smart folks of Utah Astronomy for an answer, is put "OT" at the top. Then if we have any astronomy-only types in the group, they can just ignore the question and answers. I'm not against the occasional non-astronomy question by any means. But I'd not like to see astronomy (& related topics) shrink to where it wasn't the primary subject anymore. On Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 1:28 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

Rather than change this one, start a new one for pan-science junkies: "Utah Science Dilettantes"
Ok, it looks like no one is in favor or changing the name and everyone that expressed an opinion had no problems with folks posting non- astronomy related science posts to the list. Cheers, patrick p.s. I'm just back from my monthly lecture at Bryce Canyon. The skies (with the Milky Way booming high overhead) were incredible!
Seems the talk about CO2 is Planetary Science. Is that not Astronomy. A rose by any other name?... Why change the name?
