While at a local eatery today a lady walked up to me and exclaimed "It's great to hear the news about Mars this August!" Yep, she'd just seen an email indicating on 27 August Mars will appear as big in the sky as the full Moon. So I guess that makes, what, 6 years that has been circulating on the web? patrick :)
Patrick, My son sent me an email about two weeks ago that made this claim. He asked me if it was true. The difference with this email from the ones I have seen in the past is this one had a very impressive Powerpoint presentation with it that would make a believer out of the nieve. I laughed at this and told my son that this rumor has been floating around for about four years in various forms. IMO, this whole thing came about because the OP confused minutes of arc with seconds of arc. If Mars at an optimal opposition was 25-30 minutes of arc in diameter instead of 25 seconds of arc, it WOULD be about the apparent size of the moon.
Yeah, I was asked about it today at work, two of my colleagues have seen this latest rehash of a 2003 event that leaves out phrases (in CAPS0 in one of the sentence "WHEN SEEN THRU A 75 POWER TELESCOPE Mars will look as large as the Moon TO THE UNAIDED EYE". --- On Tue, 5/5/09, Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> wrote: From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> Subject: [Utah-astronomy] It's baaaaack...
