Re: [Utah-astronomy] ATM session report
You're welcome Steve. So far, there has been one person I met at the museum who is very interested in starting in ATMing. No offense to all us older guys, but what is really cool is that there is a great batch of younger folks getting involved. To see the hobby being renewed this way is very satisfying. Please, if anyone out there thinks that they may be interested in making telescopes or parts for a telescope or even fixing your telescope, let me know. Or if anyone knows someone with a possible interest, let them know about the ATM sessions. It was nice to see people express an interest in ATM. Perhaps there are more people out there than we are aware of with some real interest. Just wish we could introduce them to you. Steve

The June ATM session was held on 6/09/12 and is now history. We had quite a crew there: (Charlie, Troy, Levi, Jay, Josh, Mike and Doug).
Doug worked to reduce the curve on his very fast 5 5/8" blank. By very fast, I mean the focal ratio of the blank is f3.3. He would like to rework that to f5 or f6. After about 2 hours of work with 60 grit, he accomplished this. Later in the day we poured a dental stone/tile tool which he will now use to progress through the grits.
Troy and Levi continued working on their 8" dobsonian telescope. All the major woodworking is finished now, it just needs to be assembled and the spider, focuser and mirror cell installed.
Jay brought plans for an equatorial platform he is in process of building. The plans are very detailed and should result in a great product.
Having recently attended RTMC and SAS, Charlie had some good information for us as well as an interesting hunk of borosilicate glass.
Josh worked on his bath interferometer and made some great progress with mountings for the testers' optics. It won't be long before he has a working interferometer and that is a very impressive tool to have.
Personally, I assisted others with their projects, but within the past week I made a "sun funnel" for my 70mm copy scope, and finished a 6" f8 mirror project.
It is really great to see so much going on in the ATM world and I look forward to seeing even more people become involved in the activity.
