You're right on target, Kim. From what I know, the 14th century wasn't all that great, and I'm not eager to return to it.

New subject: science vs. religion
That the earth would evolve as it is is statistically unlikely, but that it would evolve into something is not unlikely at all. To make the arguement that an intelligent design is required to reach the present state of existence is based on the presumption that the present state is a planned state rather than a state reached essentially at random.
