Mat and I are going to get out observing on Friday. I'm open for Pit n Pole or for Lakeside. If not we might try west of the Pit area. Any takers want to join us at one or the other locations? Just curious. -- Jay Eads

Seems like the Pit. If it changes I'll post here. Here are some links for directions: This is to my blog and has links to pictures: http://jaysastronomyobservingblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/pit-n-pole-directions...
From the SLAS site:
http://slas.us/maps/Pit%20%27n%20Pole.htm Between the two, you should be able to get there. I'd advise looking at the images I posted. They can help. If you come out at dusk/dark, it is easy to miss. On Thu, Sep 29, 2011 at 5:57 PM, Mark Shelton <woodturninginc@yahoo.com>wrote:

Wonderful night but the seeing was okay, and I did something I haven't done in about 5 years, observe without sketching a single item (that is like an astro-photographer observing without taking a picture). You can read about the night in detail if you want at my blog and the others can fill in. It does seem each time out I am having a mini adventure. My adventure last night is losing or misplacing my 27mm Panoptic cover (the cover works for either end). So I am going to go unload in a minute and if I don't find it, I will need to replace it. I know there is a place online I can order caps but does anyone have any local suggestions? http://jaysastronomyobservingblog.blogspot.com/ On Sat, Oct 1, 2011 at 7:46 AM, Craig Smith <cs2560@gmail.com> wrote:

Oh, and I split Epsilon Lyra in my 14 inch dob at 75x and that is confirmed by Mat, Mark Shelton, and Jorge G. who are on this list. Jorge and I got it down to 61x but Mat couldn't get a line for him to call it split so I'll settle for the 75x as a clean split since everyone saw it. Your welcome to come out later this month and we can try this again if you want to see it for yourself. The real question is once I get the Zambuto Mirror in a few months, how low can that go!? Had a great time on Friday observing at Pit-N-Pole. The weather somewhat cooperated, hesitantly. At first it was not looking good cloud wise, but by full dark, most obvious clouds were gone but the transparency was not great, so there must have been some high, thin clouds. Around midnight, it clouded over again, and wouldn't you know it, by the time we were all packed up and ready to go, it was clear again... As it was, I was still able to bring in Stephan's Quintet. I spent most of the observing time viewing the showpiece objects for this time of year and not trying to go real deep. NGC6939 and NGC6946, the galaxy/open cluster combo were the "real cool" objects for me that night. Thanks to Jay for reminding me of them! There were 6 scopes out there which is, I think, a good turnout. Jay, Josh, Jorge, Mark, Allan, Wendy, Saturday and I all had a great time together. Josh really impressed me with his enthusiasm and willingness to learn. He drove my 8" scope and within just a few minutes of quick pointers, he was off and finding objects. As Jay mentioned in his report, we split Epsilon Lyrae down to 75X in his 14" dob! He and Jorge were able to go even lower clear down to 61X, I think it was. I just could not get both components to split at that lower power. I didn't try hard with my scope, as I was enjoying the DSO's. Hope to see even more out next time! Keep looking up, Mat -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Hutchings, Mat (H USA) Sent: Friday, September 30, 2011 6:45 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Observing Friday Night Mark; The Pit-N-Pole it is. Josh; If you can meet me at the "4-way" intersection (the one with Smith's and the Chevron station), on the way towards Cedar Fort, I can pick you up there. Give me a call at 801-699-2233 or 801-253-8861 and we can work it out. But call soon, as I'm leaving my house at 6:00; that puts me at that intersection at around 6:20. Sorry for the late posting, but I have been away from my computer all day until now. Josh, Can you call me at eight zero one, six three four, six zero seven six? Mat can give you a ride or so can I. Question. Are you bringing a scope or do you want me to bring my 10 inch for you to use or Mat's eight inch? I have a 32mm Q70 and a 17mm Stratus you can use to observe with the ten. I need to know as I am going to start loading in about 20 minutes. Jay Mark, Pit n Pole looks clear with thunderstorms over the mountains nearby right now.
