Holy cow, the APOD site said you can see it with your naked eye (filtered of course). I tried it just now and you can! I even had my 12 year old daughter verify that I saw it ;) The scope is coming out for this one. While not common, naked-eye spots aren't once-in-a-lifetime events. I've seen them on half a dozen occassions over the course of my life. I'll definitely check this out when I get home. Thanks!
I tried my 10X50 binos. using the C8 filter and it's even more awesome. It's just been a long time since I last saw sun spots naked eye. So it was refreshing to see them. I did check it out with the scope and there is a nice line of spots across the face of the sun. The naked eye view is more impressive though, I thought. In my original reply, I said "filtered of course". I'm getting my lawyers lined up. Seriously. Though this would not qualify for the "Darwin awards", if someone looks at the sun unfiltered because of sun spots, maybe they should be nominated. However, if someone (make him male) had his unfiltered telescope on the sun and the eyepiece is at well, below the belt level, he could legitimately take himself out of the gene pool. A cautious around unfiltered telescopes during the day, Mat -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Josephine Grahn Sent: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 5:42 PM To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Giant Sun Spots Ya know guys.... I watched the sun rise this morning through my 50mm f/9 solar scope (Baader filter). Incredible. I took this photo through the scope with my cell phone camera, hand-held, set on 8X (on top of the 16X of the scope itself), so the resolution, contrast, and focus isn't great, but you can clearly see sunspot groups. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii24/JethroTull1958/SunspotsSept292011.jp... The largest was easily visible without magnification, through the Badder filter only.

It's in the works. My apologies if anyone is under the impression that the solar scopes are mere days away. This is a hobby, not a business. In fact I'm going to be losing money on them, but I'll stick with the $25 price I initially mentioned so as to not appear to be running a scam. I have zero shop time 4 days per week and must balance other activities against the astro stuff when not at work. These will probably take a couple of months.
I appreciate the update and time frame. I had no idea what the time frame was! I don't want you to lose money on this. I appreciate the offer :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Hards" <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, September 29, 2011 12:50:49 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Giant Sun Spots On 9/29/11, jcarman6@q.com <jcarman6@q.com> wrote:

I have uploaded 4 pictures of Sunspot 1302 (and others). Here is the link http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2017489238916.95706.1294436682&l=79... Two pictures were taken straight through a C-8. The other two were taken using eye-piece projection with a 22mm and 16mm eyepiece, respectively. I would have loaded on this board, but the "moderator" said my e-mail was too big, so I loaded them to my facebook page and provided a link. Hope you enjoy them.
