RE: [Utah-astronomy] Re: Planetarium at the Univ of NV, Reno
Chuck, Joe: I am not aware of other planetariums (planetaria?)in shopping centers. Too bad our great State couldn't support a stand-alone science center such as that proposed years ago. But then, we're not very good at any kind of public education, are we? By "modern" needs I was really referring to modern structural systems, climate controls, electrical power and lighting systems, accessibility, etc. and not really program needs. I do agree, however that the current ("modern," if you prefer) program goals of planetariums and science centers are closer to entertainment and not science training and teaching. Maybe we should just turn over all such publicly-funded efforts to Disneyland, Universal Studios, and such. Afterall, isn't making money now the goal instead of teaching? And how can you make money if you don't simply entertain?

Dead-on, Kim. Every day I meet Utah-educated people, some with advanced degrees, and they can't spell simple words, express themselves effectively, and in some cases, do relatively simple math operations. Not all, mind you, but enough to indict the system. Chuck __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. I concur. Yet the state wants to cut more money from education?!?!?!?!!? Utah is already the state with the least funding per student in the whole US, class sizes are enormous, ect. My mother is an elementary school teacher, and I hear about it to no end. It's true, I have sat in on some classes that she was teaching. Have you ever tried to control 30+ ten-year-olds, let alone teach them anything? My mom is a good teacher, but against those kind of numbers, very little can be done. Plus most of the parents don't help their kids learn anything. These kids are the rising generation, they will be running things in twenty or thirty years. The state is cutting its own throat.
