Here's a page from Grand Junction's National Weather Service's site I found while checking the local forecasts for potential observing sites: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/gjt/leonid.htm From what I've seen so far from the National Weather Service and the Weather Channel .com the best outlook for both clear skies and temp is South and West...somewhere like St. George, Las Vegas, Death Valley. Less clear and colder near Delta/Filmore/Torrey/Moab/Mexican Hat. Please let me know if you'd like to find out where our little caravan ends up traveling on Monday. We're thinking of driving somewhere Monday afternoon, checking in at a local motel, going out for the night, coming back and sleeping for a bit before coming back Tuesday. I'll make sure and send out an email right before we head off letting you know our destination. Praise be to the Clear Sky Gods! Dave Bennett dlbennett@mac.com
Dave, let's keep in touch. I am thinking about the Moab area -- what's the forecast for there? Thanks, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
David Levy's astronomy article in the Sunday Parade Newspaper supplement a week or two ago mentioned a lunar eclipse on Nov 19. I jotted the time down in my daytimer as about 6:15 to 7:15 PM our time. A book I have lists that this eclipse would be visible from the Eastern US. If the weather is cooperative, this eclipse will be visible for us also, won't it? And do I have the time right? Thanks, Troy
Hi, Please note that this is a penumbral eclipse. And not even a deep one at that. Chances are good that even if you are looking at it you will not notice any darkening. Ah, but just wait until next year. Two total lunars visible from right here in Utah ( http://planet.state.ut.us/files/UTECLIPS.TXT ). Patrick Troy Adair wrote:

Dear Friends, I have a favor to ask. If anyone has an interesting Leonids observation early tomorrow morning, can you send me a brief quote to use in a Deseret News article? Please send it to me ASAP at bau@desnews.com -- and please put your name in as you'd like it in the paper, with your city of residence. I am not certain when the story will be in, or even if I will have a story (as opposed to just a photo with a caption). But in case I'm able to write one for the Tuesday morning deadline, please send me info as soon as convenient. Thanks to all the great folks in the newsgroup! -- Joe Bauman Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Hi friends, I need one or two more good comments about light pollution, hopefully with specific examples of seeing. Anyone? You could call me at 237-2169 or send an email. It's for a story I'm working on now. Thanks, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
"Back in the mid-eighties, Salt Lake experienced a large power outage during a rather severe storm one autumn evening. Although the blackout was not valley-wide, a significant portion of the city was in darkness for 4 or 5 hours. I distinctly remember looking up at the sky from my backyard in Sugarhouse and noticing that the clouds did not glow with their usual sickly yellow light reflected from the city lights. As the weather began to settle later that night, I went back outside and found myself looking through a tiny hole in the clouds. What I saw through that little gap was breathtaking; a patch of Milky Way as bright as any I had every seen from the country side. The clouds soon filled in the hole and the power started to come back on throughout the city. The blackout was over, much to my dismay. After that night, I began to have fantasies about the city putting on an annual city-wide Lights Out Party so everyone would have a chance to see the sky in its unpolluted form." Great, thanks! I plan to use this. Where should I say you live? Also, member SLAS? Thanks again, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
The warm observing season is about gone. That means it is time to get ready for next year. What better way to start the next year than with a new telescope? I will be holding another mirror grinding class this winter. This year I would like to start by building the telescope while we wait for the glass to arrive, and then grind the mirror to go inside. I am looking for hearty souls willing to brave this experience. Your cost for this class will be your materials plus a little more to pay for the utilities. Utilities will be determined after we see how many will be in the class. Class will once again be held in my hangar in Woods Cross. We will be building either 10" or 12-1/2" scopes. You can get an idea of mirror kit costs by visiting: www.newportglass.com orby calling Willmann Bell at (804)320-7016. Their web site is www.willbell.com, but their mirror kits are not listed. Due to a loose nut on my computer, I have lost the names of those who have expressed an interest. Please respond to this inquiry if you are interested. I anticipate the class going for about four to five months, and you wil need to make a committment to attending and keeping up. Brent __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hey Brent, Although I have always been interested in building my own scope, I doubt I will have the funds to participate in this class. Just for the sake of knowing though, could you give me a ball park figure of what a completed scope would cost? Thanks, in advance. PS: Another thought. If anyone would like to simply call me with a brief (brief!) Leonids observation that I could consider for a possible news story in the Deseret News, please do so. My number is (801) 237-2169. I may still be on my way home from the outback; if so, just leave a message on the phone. Pls spell your name and give your city of residence. Thanks again, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Joe & others- Compared to last year, this morning's Leonids were the 'yawn till dawn'. I ventured out to the west desert location of Binopalooza fame, and headed west across the valley to the hills there, hoping to get in the moon's shadow for the peak. Weather wize it wasn't too bad; actually pretty clear. I dozed until about 2:00 am and from the comfort of my sleeping bag I observered a dozen or two nice bright ones. The moon washed out any of the small ones. I observed on and off until about 4:00 or so, and awoke to a fairly stiff cloud cover. It never really cleared up after that; I got up about 6:00 and headed home. It's a little like fishing; sometimes it's hot, and even when it's not, it's better than a day at the office! I'm looking forward to other reports- Joe Borgione (Holiday, Utah) Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:PS: Another thought. If anyone would like to simply call me with a brief (brief!) I got out into my backyard in Orem, firat for a little around 2:30, and then a little around 3:30. There was definitely an increase in frequency my second time out, probably several per minute. I noticed that most of the meteors left a green trail as they burned up. Does that tell us anything about the chemical makeup of these rocks? Or was I just seeing effects from haze/city lighting, etc? -- Dan Hanks On Tue, 19 Nov 2002, Joe Borgione wrote:
