You guys better go-ahead without me. I just realized that Jupiter and Saturn will be just about history by the time I can spend any time at the eyepiece (other than the back yard during stolen moments), and if Mars has a dust-storm, you can kiss surface detail goodbye...do it now, while Jupiter and Saturn are at their best. Also, for those with large scopes, try and detect the chevron pattern in the clouds of Venus, using violet and bluish filters. Let me know if any conclusions are drawn. Sigh. Hi Chuck, here's one for you: Do you think it's every possible to glimpse the chevron pattern in Venus' atmosphere with an 8" and without any filter? 'Cause unless I was deluding myself, I think I did once .... Best, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Yikes, I meant EVER possible, not every possible! Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Joe, visual sightings of the chevron patterns are few and far-between, and I'm going from an imperfect memory here, but I think I have read about historical figures seeing them with apertures as small as 9". Venus, with no filtration, is awfully bright- so bright that it can sometimes be hard to say what phase it is quickly. Can you describe your observation? C. --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

I seem to remember it was through a cloud cover -- earth clouds, that is. But it was a long time ago and I don't recall it well. Maybe I simply convinced myself it was there because I expected to see it! -- Thanks, Joe Joe Bauman science & military reporter Deseret News bau@desnews.com (801) 237-2169
Or, you could have "Brent-eye"! ;) C. --- Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com> wrote:

It's a complement! The highest praise a visual observer can garner! ;) "E. E. Barnard bent towards the eyepiece, expecting to see nothing, yet the Brent-eyed observer was easily able to discern festoons, widgeons, & ptarmigan at all Jovian latitudes...." excerpted from "The Underground History of Astronomy" by Jack Cardz.
