I am either an unskilled solar observer or someone is in error when talking about large spots on the sun recently. I have not seen any spots on the sun for months and then only once. you are probably just looking at the wrong time, we are probably a year or two from solar max. The last solar max every time you looked there were a lot of spots and prominences. Hopefully we will be near maximum during the 2012 eclipse.
