You know more thinking about this picture gallery thing... I could install a picture gallery on my home website... free of charge, I have 80 megs of hard drive doing just about nothing. :) This is the gallery: http://gallery.menalto.com/ http://gallery.menalto.com/modules
php?set_albumName=samples_personal&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include
view_album.php
This is a version of the gallery I have installed on a website I run:
http://www.animalfoster.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=gallery&file=index
(If you get a blank page hit reload.. some weird bug makes it not sure the first time) It would be cleaner without the other website stuff around the edges. And there is more updated version out that I could also install.
Oh, here is a friend's site who runs it: http://thinsilkthreads.com/gallery/albums.php (yeah lots of dogs huh lol.)
I'd even get a domain name, if folks will use it, make it a bit autonomous that way. It would probably be a couple of weeks, at least, until I could get it up and running. (going camping this weekend. =) ) Each person would have their own account, be able to upload and manage their own pictures. Anyone interested?

Rich, Not that I know of, but that's a good idea. We could start something up like on Bravenet, they have some ads, but I do believe they have a 'picture gallery' type thing where people can upload pics and others can view them. Think that'd work?
I'll look into xmission too.

Cynthia,
Does xmission support a "files" area where images and such could be uploaded for others on this list to view? -Rich

Hi all, apparently it didn't go to the list because it's too big. Not really a large file but I guess it is past some email size limitation. Anyone who would like to see it, please send me your email address and I'll forward it on. Best wishes, Joe

Aw no fee would be required. The gallery software is free, and I run the web server anyway for various things. :) The only expense I'd have would be a domain name, and heck those are fairly cheap, I can get one for $9.99 a year. And it's fun to own domain names. Question is.. what would be a good domain name? Everybody vote... ;) 1. www.utahastronomy.com 2. www.utah-astronomy.com 3. www.utahastronomy.org 4. www.utah-astronomy.org 5. www.utah-astro-pics.com 6. other... make a suggestion. :) I looked over the gallery software some and it looks pretty slick. Checking now to see if I have all the required elements. I'm sure I do for the basic install, not sure for the fancy install. The gallery would be limited to those folks on the list, and depending on just thow many pictures you have, and how much hard drive space I have... so we'd have to see about that. :) Also, I'm pretty sure you'd be able to remote link (put up a link to the picture located on my site). Though I'd have to see if that slows the server down too much. Of course... any excuse to get a new computer is a good excuse. ;) Cyn -------Original Message------- From: Astronomy in Utah Date: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 09:45:07 PM To: Astronomy in Utah Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Q. for Cynthia That's incredibly generous of you, I'd even be willing to pay a (small) fee. This is a truly great idea, Cyn. I go for the .org, because it's not a commercial venture. And I don't like it when people string words together -- the English language developed spaces between words for a purpose -- so I vote for the one with the hyphen. You should always go for the .com if it is available. Even though it is for pictures, it could become so much more and .com is more commonly associated with web pages despite what type of organization it is. I would suggest you go for #1..It has better long-term potential. ----- Original Message ----- From: Cynthia Blue To: utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2003 7:44 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Q. for Cynthia Aw no fee would be required. Any of those would be fine, though generally less typing is better. How about utah-astro.org or ut-astro.org? (you can also skip the www business)... Rich --- Cynthia Blue <cynlists@cynthiablue.net> wrote:

Once we have the base domain name, Cynthia can easily do some fun mappings like: photos.ut-astro.org files.ut-astro.org directions.ut-astro.org (the last could be for maps and directions to wolf creek, gravel pit, etc.) And so forth. In other words, there's no need to get too specific with the domain name itself. 2 more cents, Rich --- Cynthia Blue <cynlists@cynthiablue.net> wrote:

Okay the tally so far: 1 for www.utah-astro.com 1 for www.utahastronomy.com 1 for www.utah-astronomy.com 1 for www.utah-astronomy.org 1 for www.utah-astro-pics.com So... lol, no one has gotten more than one vote. :) Unless I miscounted which is always a possibility. A coworker sugessted using www.utastronomy.com... which I think I'm liking the best so far. My reasoning... I think .com is the most common extention, and even tho it's supposedly for a commercial site, it being the most common would be the easiest to remember. I don't really care for dashes or other punctuation in URLs, seems to kinda clutter things up. I do like short... and yet astro... somehow reminds me of the Jetson's dog... :) and Astro Burgers... LOL I like the longer term potential of utah astronomy, instead of having the pics in there. I guess what Chuck said is right... whatever it is, it'll work. :) And anyway... bookmarks are easier to use than spelling out the URL... hehe. I'm still waiting for input.. I'll probably buy one later today or tomorrow. :) Cyn
