Joe -- I know, man! I was there! That night is still one of the weirdest things. That's exactly where I go -- to the Big Canyon sign, take a left, then find the spot at the berm.... Anyway, I'm probably up to it for tonight. When are you getting there? I don't want to interrupt anything. I'll not likely do a ton of observing before the moon is out of the picture, though Saturn was good the other night. I'm not a planet person, but I could see through the rings, see the shadow, and finally saw Rhea. I'd be interested in looking for more moons... Anyway, I'll see you there, likely. Or not, like last time... ---- Rev. Michael A. van Opstall Department of Mathematics, University of Utah Office: JWB 313 opstall@math.utah.edu
Mind if I join you? I've been once before on my own, no one else was there but some coyotes in the distance. I was planning to try to get there just before moonset around 1.00. I don't want to crowd you guys out, sometimes it's nice to be alone under the stars... Thanks, Ian On Tue, Jun 7, 2011 at 6:31 PM, Michael Vanopstall <opstall@math.utah.edu>wrote:

I am very envious of those of you going to Lakeside. I took my 10 inch out for several jours this evening to test some things I had done to the scope and despite some wind, seeing was really good. I spent an hour on the moon and the craters along the terminator and 240x was wonderful. Saturn was also wonderful with the storm and other features visible. At M51 the supernova was very hard to make out and averted vision showed it barely at times. I went to M13 and ended on M57. Again this was to do a brief mirror test and that was successful so a good quick night out. Now I guess it is time to work on some doubles. Again, good luck to those out tonight.
