I got out Wednesday night and tried out my new Kwick Focus Hartmann mask to get a sharper focus with my Canon Digital Rebel. I think we did a better job of focusing than we did back in December. Stars look better than the M38 image.
I'm still limited to only 30 second exposures because of my polar alignment issues. I'm going to try to train my mount next time by turning on PEC and feeding the guiding corrections into the mount's computer.
I took 32 30 second frames at my house in St. George. By the time we got the image focused and framed the battery died so I had to recharge the battery for a while. I guess I need a spare for dark sky locations. We came back out and M35 was just past zenith and high overhead. This was my only target for that night. I tried to take an image of the Flame Nebula but the batteries died again. Maybe I'll try the Flame-Horsehead area next time.

Hi Deb M35 looks good, more detail and crisper images and just a tad bit of trailing. You are going to put your TV on your G8 correct?? With the shortish FL of the TV, a close polar alignment would be OK, but a refined alignment, of course, is best. On your Rebel is there some provision for a release cable?? If so use 'bulb - B' setting w/ a locking release cable for a longer exposure maybe 1 to 2 minutes, do get a spare battery or two if you're away from a recharge source, I get 2-3 hrs. w/ my D100. I also feel that even though we can do astrophotography w/ our DSLR cameras, the best digital images are from dedicated CCD cameras, again sports car vs. pick up. Keep up the good work, you're looking good. aloha Rob
