OT: Firefox and Windows Explorer help
I apologize for bothering this list, but I don't' know anyone else as knowledgeable as this group who might be able to help me. A few months ago I had to replace my computer and I have had a nagging problem with my newer computer that I never had with my old one. I'm sure it's just a setting somewhere. I use only Mozilla Firefox for all of my internet use, except email. I am constantly barraged with Explorer pop-up windows even when I'm using Firefox. I've tried disabling Explorer altogether, but without success. Setting Explorer's pop-up blocker to "high" just isn't working. How can I get rid of Bill Gates et. al. constant hacking into my internet use, especially from Mozilla? Any ideas would be appreciated. Kim
You almost certainly have some Adware (basically a virus that forces advertisements on you). I'd recommend downloading and running Ad-Aware - http://download.cnet.com/Ad-Aware-Free-Internet-Security/3000-8022_4-1004591... and/or IObit - http://download.cnet.com/IObit-Security-360/3000-8022_4-10967594.html Chances are that it is IE that has been compromised, but there are some cases where add-ons or other compromises in Firefox can result in continual pop-ups. These programs should find and solve the problem. Jared On Wed, Apr 20, 2011 at 3:36 PM, Kim Hyatt <kimharch@cut.net> wrote:

Thanks for the tip, but I'm hesitant to use a site that immediately caused yet another explorer pop up with its own add as soon as I went to it. It also doesn't warn you that its use is not free until after you download a trial that only partly completes its task until telling you that you now have to buy the product. (I absolutely hate this kind of online deception. HATE IT!) Other suggestions? Get some other brand of anti malware software. Trend Micro Internet Security does both regular virus protection and malware protection. On 4/20/2011 3:04 PM, Kim Hyatt wrote:

I'm not trying to be cheap but I just can't keep buying new software. I've been using AVG but obviously it isn't correcting this particular problem. I'll look into what you suggest - and thanks. Ad aware has a free version and it is a good product, but you have to avoid the two or three attempts to misdirect you into getting the "for pay" one.. My current favorite, and one that is much more adept at figuring out the issues you are looking at, is something called Malwarebytes. It too has a paid and a free version. Download the free version here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php I have used it to clean up several computers where I work, when the operators had something slide by their defenses. If it does not find anything, chances are excellent that your computer is clean, and it is a weird setting that I know nothing about. (While I do some support of windows at work, I am a Mac user...) If it can wait 10 days until I am home, and if you ever come to SLC, I would be happy to look at it. Jo Quoting William Lockman <lockman@aznex.net>:

I'm going to have to decide on one to use permanently in about a month. I'm going to keep this one, malwarebytes, in mind. On 4/20/2011 6:24 PM, Josephine Grahn wrote:

Kim, I’m not familiar with AVG. I use Avast for my antivirus needs on the windoze emulators I use on my MacBook Pro. I use ESET Cybersecurity on the MacBook. Avast has a free version (it’s the only one I’ve ever used for my windoze stuff) and it seems to have a powerful engine under the scan function. It’s picked up and disabled a few things from my emulators. It can’t hurt to try it. Dave On Apr 20, 2011, at 4:34 PM, Kim Hyatt wrote:

Chances are that it is IE that has been compromised, but there are some cases where add-ons or other compromises in Firefox can result in continual pop-ups. These programs should find and solve the problem.

Thanks all for the tips. Last night I downloaded Norton 360 for a 30-day trial. I'll be looking into your other suggestions as well. Thanks again. Kim As mentioned AVG is a pretty good virus scanner, but it's not perfect. I haven't found anything that catches every single virus, spyware, adware or trojan. I've had pretty good luck with Microsoft Security Essentials and its free. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx MalwareBytes is a free spyware/adware removal program that I've used for several years. The free version doesn't run in the background, so it isn't taking up resources until called on. Make sure you keep it updated before running a scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Avoid installing multiple virus scanners at the same time or you will take a huge performance hit. I've repaired many PCs that are so bogged down, they can't even function. When their PC gets infected, they start installing everything to cure the problem. In fact, this usually compounds the problem. There are other tools available that are more involved to use. Although you might lose recent program installs, you might consider rolling your PC back to an earlier date using Windows System Restore. Make sure an data files you have created since then are backed up externally. A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with one of our IS guys at work about this subject. He said that there is no software that catches absolutely everything. New malware and viruses are being written everyday, and about the best you can expect to catch is 80%. I personally don't know enough about this to evaluate the validity of his opinion. I've had very little virus problem on my own pc. I encounter spy and other malware more than anything. On 4/21/2011 9:54 AM, Fred Orrell wrote:

I apologize for bothering this list, but I don't' know anyone else as
knowledgeable as this group who might be able to help me.

Steve Jobs? well I checked the block pop-ups and I get no pop-ups all without buying any software. Windows XP was introduced when I bought my Mac, I have not needed to buy any software in that time. As I recall I bought something like 4 versions of windows before that, I only use a PC in my observatory and never surf the internet on it.
Do you think that Steve is not guilty of similar tricks?

Well he must be doing something right. I see that today Apple posted record second quarter revenue of $24.67 billion and record second quarter net profit of $5.99 billion. I'm sure that'll tick up a bit next Tuesday when I finally add an iPad2 to my Apple collection. Hmmm, maybe I should offer my original MacPlus at next month's SPOC swap meet. LOL! patrick On 20 Apr 2011, at 16:48, Kim Hyatt wrote:

Apple seems to get you with new hardware, I think I will wait for the iPad4, they really need to add a USB or firewire port. As far as software they seem to be getting less expensive as $10 Apps are replacing expensive programs.

I've also found on Apps if you wait for six months or so (maybe a year on the more popular ones) they come up for free. There are several Apps that are now free that let you know when Apps come up for free. A lot aren't ones you would want but some are. Best way I like searching for Apps is Genius or on my MacBookPro in the iTunes store. Regardless, I really do enjoy my iPad. On Thu, Apr 21, 2011 at 9:36 AM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:
