The Big Freeze-9 December 2013
Some snow pictures (can’t really say it’s winter) from St. George. I had to clear out the driveway observatory with a flat-head shovel. That was a real treat. I guess when area businesses get in another batch of snow shovels I’d better buy one. I was sure missing the snow thrower I used to have when I lived in Salt Lake City. It’s 11:26 MST (18:26 UTC for Patrick and Joe) and it’s 14°F (-10°C for Patrick and Joe) at my house. http://www.flickr.com/photos/78046474@N06/sets/72157638513931966/ Dave

That’s no joke. I’ve got a couple of those short, stubby palm trees in the back yard. They may not make it. Palm trees in St. George are a joke. A least I can take mine out on my own. People with the really tall palm trees may be in a pickle come the great thaw. Dave On Dec 9, 2013, at 11:36, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:

It was just another typical winter weekend up here. Lousy roads, worse drivers. Yesterday I spent 90 minutes shoveling my 100-foot-long, double-wide driveway & RV pad next to the garage. About 6" on the flat, 12" drifts. I slept very well last night. We had another half inch of fluff out there this morning. 6-degrees F when I woke up this morning. I have a package coming from Bill Vorce of Telescope Warehouse. I think it spent the weekend stuck on the road close to your house... While living in Portland, OR in the early '60s, Iron Fireman built a new corporate office, complete with 6 or 8 large palms spaced across the front of the building. Everyone snickered, as even tho _P_ is a more moderate climate than SLC, there is still snow and freezing temps. Come fall though, up went individual glass towers around each tree, heated of course, so each tree had its own greenhouse. Was quite a sight to drive past the building, with snow on the ground. You could almost feel the trees smiling at you! 73 On 12/9/2013 11:54 AM, Chuck Hards wrote:

Sort of makes one wonder about global warming when Saint George and Zion Park get 6 inches of snow. Maybe it would be wiser to say climate change. ________________________________ From: Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, December 9, 2013 11:34 AM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] The Big Freeze-9 December 2013 Some snow pictures (can’t really say it’s winter) from St. George. It is warmer in Alaska than St George.

Well, there's one handy thing about these cold temps. I run my camera at -10 year round. In July and August it sometimes has problems cooling down that far. But tonight I didn't even need to turn the cooling circuit on as ambient has been between around -14 all night. Sure is a dry cold too. I've been open for a bit shy of 11 hours tonight and there no frost on the scope. patrick p.s. I can certify at least 320 galaxies to be supernova free tonight... It’s 3°F at my house right now. Sun is out. Another lovely day in St. George. Toward the end of the week it’s supposed to start warming up. Good thing. I cleared off the driveway observatory, but it was 23°F last night at 19:00, so I decided not to brave an imaging session in the cold. Instead, I decided it was better to set with the wieners and watch some TV. Figured it’s a good thing I have a pool heater, too. 3°F at my house at 5:30 AM. 10°F in downtown SLC at the same time. I guess that's an example of the "urban heat dome". ;-) Dave, I guess those in your neighborhood without pool heaters have skating rinks now. On Tue, Dec 10, 2013 at 8:38 AM, Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> wrote:

Not new. I've been doing supernova searches off and on for a couple of years. Typically I spend my nights taking data for one place or another but occasionally I'm between others' projects and I use supernova and minor planet searches as a gap filler. Admittedly my chances of finding a SN are not good as I can only cover a few hundred galaxies a night but as was posted here earlier today it can happen. patrick On 10 Dec 2013, at 06:42, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:
