Hey fellow stargazers, Would someone who's running Google Earth on a PC do me a favor and email me directly so I could send you a Google Earth placemark for the Wolf Creek observing site for a test run. Just checking to make sure the Google Earth .kmz file works cross platform. I'd include it here but wasn't sure if an email with attachments would bounce. Thanks! Dave Bennett P.S. I'm thinking about putting together a Google Earth placemark 'tour' package for some of the popular observing sites here Utah. Please let me know if any of you would be interested in such a thing and also if you have suggestions for the list. The tour could begin with a 'street level' view of Patrick's observatory ;-) db
I'm not sure what this is, but it sounds interesting. Can anyone fill me in? Hey Joe, It would be a virtual tour of the various stargazing locales around Utah using Google Earth. It could also be very useful to someone trying to find an observing site for the first time where GE shows Lat/Long and access roads. Most of the maps on the SLAS website show only an arrow on a Utah state map to indicate the site. That may be useful if it was intended to protect a site's anonymity but, as the general idea is to help someone locate a place, not very helpful. Many of the observing sites we frequent are on public land so I don't think anonymity is the issue; the maps for private & public star party sites are all located on a page that can be viewed by non- members ( http://slas.us/starpartymaps.htm ). The .kmz file allows people to save 'tours' and specific placemarks and send them to someone else for them to open using their own Google Earth software. Available here by the way for PC/Mac/Linux: http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html Dave

That sounds like a great idea, Dave. For people not up on the latest technology, could you explain how to access these views? Best wishes, Joe On Mar 8, 2008, at 11:17 AM, Dave Bennett wrote:

Hi Joe,
To access Google Earth you need to download software, to your PC, from the weblink Dave provided. Once you have done that you can access their satellite views and growing number of street level views. Road names, Parks, Restarant, Gas Stations Etc. It is well worth downloading the software. Erik That sounds like a great idea, Dave. For people not up on the latest

While not as full featured as the downloadable version, many of Google Earth's features are incorporated in Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps patrick On 09 Mar 2008, at 17:22, erikhansen@TheBlueZone.net wrote:

Hey Dave, You beat me to the punch line, I was going to post a question to everyone and see if we could get just such a tour made up! So I think it'd be a great idea. Go ahead and send the .kmz my way I'll check it out for you! Thanks. Howard (sumoetx@yahoo.com) BTW the "Street View" of my home shows my garbage cans out with one tipped over, must've been a monday morning picture! And recent too, my neighbors 'For Sale' sign was up and they only moved last fall. --- Dave Bennett <dlbennett@mac.com> wrote:

Hi Howard, Glad to see there's some interest in this. Because this would not be SLAS specific (or sanctioned :-) I will keep the tour limited to sites located on public lands such as national forests, BLM, State Parks, National Parks, etc. I'm sure I'll miss someone's favorite site initially but I do want to keep adding and updating sites for the tour as suggestions trickle in. I'll let everyone know when I've got a list formulated and go from there. Dave On Mar 8, 2008, at 11:00 AM, Howard Jackman wrote:

Hi Dave,
Please e-mail what you have done to me also. I used Google Earth to get Lat & Long for my observatory. It was dead on for my Losmandy Gemini System. Your project would be a very good thing to have on our SLAS Website. In an unrelated topic: SL County has hired a consulting firm to draft a County Master Plan for their Zoo, Arts, and Parks programs. If any of you have any thoughts about how any of our Star Party or Sun Party sites could be improved, please share with me or Ann House or any board member for that matter. SLAS will be asked to complete a survey being taken by that firm in about 2 weeks. It will be discussed at the next SLAS Board meeting. Erik, PS: I've attached my favorite YouTube video, I know you will like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dpRsI5ckA8 Hi Howard,
