Re: [Utah-astronomy] Finally, a decent night of seeing (not for me)
Jim, I had the advantage of using my setting circles to find my doubles. I first to a visual polar alignment on Polaris, then I dial in the RA circle. This method gets me in the ballpark. On Beta Monocerotis I used my 22 Panoptic (40X) to find it, then I put in the 7mm Nagler once I centered it in the field of view. Some doubles are bright enough to use my Starbeam red dot finder to locate them. Epsilon Canis Majoris is a difficult unequal double requiring good seeing to split it. I read a post on the AstroMart Double Star forum on this star so I wanted to give it a try. The reason why this star is difficult is that the primary star is at 1.5 mag while the secondary star is a faint 7.4 mag. The faint secondary was about at the 4 o'clock position in my refractor.
