Joe, I would enjoy doing a MaxIm imaging session with you. Perhaps we can talk Patrick into an evening that works for all three of us. The focusing method you refer to is known as a Hartmann Mask, and I think they work pretty well for planetary imaging etc. But for critical focus on a fast newt like my F3.3 Epsilon, some type of software is extremely helpful.
