Astronomy-Earth Day 2007 in Utah - Notes

I wonder why the media didn't bother coming out to SPOC??? That's odd.
Thanks Guy, but I'm not up for a discussion on intra-club politics and the wisdom of expanding SLAS programs. I was just out trying to enjoy the weekend and some astronomy after working on Saturday. Kurt, only a government employee could come up with something like that from a simple question. First, that question wasn't posed to you. It's merely an observation put out there to ANYONE who might have a clue as to the reason. With the mention of a Astronomy Day celebration also being held at SPOC, I found it wierd, that there was no news media reporting on that part of the celebration. That's all, nothing more, nothing less. Quoting Kurt Fisher <fisherka@csolutions.net>:

OK, here's part of the explanation since everyone is getting so serious and all. I can't speak for tthe other media, but the Deseret News would have had some coverage if I had realized the date of Astronomy Day. I may have had emails. I'm sure Patrick mentioned it to me but I spaced on it. For a long time I was on special assignment to focus on Bosnia, and I concentrated on that coverage. I guess nothing else penetrated. I had been working so hard on Bosnia that I just did not think about anything else before those articles were printed, and then I had a lot of catch-up to do. When I realized I'd missed Astronomy Day, I believed I had not received an e-mail about it but Ann showed me that I had. So at least as far as this medium (or half-baked?) is concerned, I take the blame for overlooking it. Astronomy is extremely important to me and I think to this newspaper. I would promise to do better next Astronomy Day, but I'll be retired by then. Thanks for your understanding, Joe

Joe, you always do a great job covering Astronomy events. You are tops when it comes to the print media! Quoting Joe Bauman <bau@desnews.com>:

Actually I met with Ann about Astronomy Day PR but when we realized the planetarium was already contacting media I suggested we not confuse things by duplicating the planetarium's efforts. So, as far as I know the only official PR the club did was Ann and I being on KCPW, Ann speaking with Sheena at the Tribune and Boyd McNeil and I speaking with the Tooele paper (where, BTW, they ran a nice picture of me in front of the Refractor House and the picture caption saying it was a picture of Boyd... <grin>). For the record, early Saturday evening while folks were setting up I counted 20 scopes at SPOC (17 portables and the three in the observatories). I guess I should have done a later count once everyone was there but, hey, I was having too much fun in the Refractor House. Also for the record, my tooth is back (you had to be there)... :) pw
I think the reason Channel 4 was at This Is The Place was that the fellow who manages PR for This Is The Place Park was there that night. He was on his cell phone pretty much all night trying to get TV stations interested in covering the star party. Yes, it was breezy, and yes, it was COLD. If I'd had the Hot Chocolate concession I'd have cleaned up that night. However, the skies were very clear (for our purposes) and everyone in attendance seemed to be really enjoying themselves. Great turnout! This Is The Place is actually a pretty decent place for star parties. Stacy Palen's Black Holes lecture (including BH discoveries news that's less than a week old) had about a hundred and twenty people in attendance. Her lecture was, as usual, excellent. Thanks, everyone, for doing such a fantastic job with this year's Astronomy Day.
