In response to M Wilson: Yes, I do enjoy star sharing. Even though I am at the low end of the expertise spectrum among members of this forum, I can usually impress the neighbors. And my low-tech equipment has two advantages: (1) it does not inspire much covetousness, nor does it represent my retirement nest-egg if it were stolen, and (2) it's quick to set up and take down. Finding obscure stuff (especially in light-polluted skies of the valley) is tricky because it is not computer-assisted, but for the kind of big stuff the neighbors want to see, the Telrad is usually all I need. My first taste of astronomy was in the 6th grade when my teacher, Kirk Wood, did a similar star sharing night at the school with his home-made telescope. Maybe I can trigger an interest in some other young kid. I have thought of doing the same but then wonder if having an expensive piece of equipment on dispaly in my front yard may give some nefarious types in the neighborhood the idea that I had something worth stealing when no one is at home.
