That reminds me of when Dave Bernson and I were at a base camp at 10,000 feet in Chile to watch a total solar eclipse in 1991. The eclipse was great but the view of the Large Magellanic Cloud through a 10" Coulter Odyssey was even better. It was in November and we saw the Large Cloud rising in the east. I was amazed that you could resolve the brighter globular clusters in the Cloud and the Tarantella Nebula was spectacular. -- Don -----Original Message----- From: utah-astronomy-bounces+djcolton=piol.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:utah-astronomy-bounces+djcolton=piol.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Jay Eads Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 2010 10:56 PM To: Utah Astronomy Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Interesting view of the Southern Sky Joe, Yes, those are the Large and Small Clouds. Stéphane Guisard, who takes Deep Sky shots in an interesting way, took the following shots from Chile.
The first is from December 5, 2010, at the European Southern Observatorys Paranal Observatory. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g77CxWquJEU&feature=player_embedded#!
Here is a link to the explanation on Bad Astronomy.

This is called Star Trails from the Southern Hemisphere from the same site:

This is called a Milky Way All Around:
