This weekend I installed and configured a Linux laptop and was reminded of and installed Gimp - a freeware program that duplicates the functionality of Photoshop (e.g. layers and masking).
Although I had always understood Gimp to be a unix program, I found that it has also been ported to Windows XP and Vista.
So, if you do not have Photoshop because of the bucks involved, Gimp is a good free open source alternative to look at.
