I'll add my voice here as well. I am a SLAS member and I appreciate basic notices about SLAS events etc being put on here but agree it should not take over the list. I however do not like Facebook. I will not be very likely to create an account and participate in the Facebook site. If you are interested in outreach you have to acknowledge that no one communication channel is adequate. I am sure that some on Facebook have no interest on an email list. Probably it would be a good idea to advertise a hashtag for Twitter and other services and SLAS would do well to promote the several channels and ensure important messages reach all of them. There is really little cost or effort with any of these. On Fri, Aug 21, 2015 at 5:43 AM, Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> wrote:
I agree with Joan. SLAS does not represent Utah as a whole. The central and southern Utah astro population continues to grow and may outnumber the SLAS roster one of these days, plus we have out-of-state members here on the list. And I am of a like mind with Joe on this. I am not on Facebook and have no intentions of setting up an account any time soon, for more than one reason. So I hope that the SLAS emails continue to go out with important messages and updates because I'm not going anywhere besides the SLAS website. Online activities take such a bite out of our lives as it is, I'm for minimizing it as much as possible. Maybe I'll change my mind when I retire, but right now life is too full of activities away from the keyboard and discretionary time is always in short supply. Adding yet another online place to visit and maintain isn't helping the mitigation. That said, U-A can shut down at anytime and not break my heart, but I do find it useful. It's not much work moderating this list, I think Rich would agree. My 2 cents. On Thu, Aug 20, 2015 at 10:07 PM, Wiggins Patrick <paw@digis.net> wrote:
Sieg's is not the first mention here on Utah-Astronomt of stuff on SLAS Talk.
With so many folks having migrated from Utah-Astronomy to SLAS Talk, anytime I've something to post these days I have to decide which of the two places to post it. (I'd prefer to not post to both places as I'm pretty sure most that moved to SLAS Talk still have a UA account).
So I'm wondering. Is it time to think about closing Utah-Astronomy and have everyone move to SLAS Talk?
SLAS Talk, BTW, is not just for SLAS members, rather it's open to all.
Thoughts?
