That was fantastic. Thanks for finding it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Hards" <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2012 4:24:01 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] OT: The Giant Brine Shrimp Someone finally uploaded Mike Cassidy's cult classic film "The Giant Brine Shrimp" to YouTube. It's in 3 parts, the url's for each are listed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEQd17JjxxU&feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkNCte9oIks&feature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5zhmbS2mSE&feature=relmfu Each part is about six to seven minutes long. This was Mike's student film at the UofU. It was rather famous locally some 40 years ago, and is still an underground classic. It used to be shown semi-regularly in the Union Building Little Theater back in those days, as well as the public library and the Blue Mouse. I was fortunate to meet and get to know Cassidy after he completed his film. He and I studied oil painting with the same Salt Lake instructor, landscape impressionist Frank Erickson. I believe Cassidy has passed away, some years ago, but can't remember when. He was an extremely intelligent young man. A note: When the giant brine shrimp tears the Tribune sign off of the Tribune building, that was Cassidy's personal jab at the company who had fired him prior to the film. IIRC, he was a photographer for the newspaper. I love the old footage of Salt Lake circa 1970-71, if memory serves. And the plot follows typical monster movies of the day. The uncaring, polluting industrial complex that spawns the monster, and the way Cassidy wove actual events into the plot. Especially good is the music playing when the young lovers are caught unawares by the monster, while making-out at the old Saltaire resort. The Doors "Light My Fire", just before...well, let it not be said that I'm a spoiler. I've watched it twice today. I'm still laughing. Thanks again, Mike, wherever you are. Enjoy!
