The Tidal Tail is 300,000 light years long. It is evident that NGC 3628 is interacting gravitationally with the other two galaxies in the Leo triplet, I believe NGC 3628 is about the same size as the Milky Way but that may be adjusted after NASA updated the size of the mass of the Milky Way last year.Tthe structure (the tidal tail) has been drawn out of the galaxy by gravitational tides during brief but violent past interactions with its large neighbors. Usually the tail is not imaged so distinctly, the tidal tail is made up of young bluish star clusters and star-forming regions. I wonder as M31 and the Milky Way begin to interact in time if one or the other will develop a tidal tail? I think the tails are cool things and they usually are a result of galaxy interactions and merging. On Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 4:26 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:

Patrick see my preliminary processing of both of your images.

M57 http://www.slas.us/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3250
Click on the images to get the full size version. Note the dark line in the lower part of M63. This is a real feature as can be seen on other images of the object. See http://www.noao.edu/outreach/aop/observers/m63fisher.jpg

Much too nice a night tonight to let it go to waste so after finishing my regular projects I got thirty 2 minute images of M-63 and repeated for M-57.
No time tonight to process so will do that later. But in the mean time if anyone would care to download and process, you'll find the raw data and master flat and dark here:
http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/M63.ZIP<http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/%7Epaw/temp/M63.ZIP> http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/M57.ZIP<http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/%7Epaw/temp/M57.ZIP>
Each ZIP file is about 36 MB so I can't leave them on the server very long. So grab them soon or they'll be gone.
Carpe noctem!
