China tested an anti-satellite weapon on January 11, 2007 destroying one of its aging weather satellites. See http://www.space.com/news/070202_china_spacedebris.html As of March 9, the total fragments created by the test are now over 1500 and counting. According to Nicolas Johnson, chief scientist for NASA's Orbital Debris Program Office at the Johnson Space Center in Houston the Chinese Test "represents the most prolific and serious fragmentation in the course of 50 years of space operations."
