It is a plasma tube, was mentioned in the article (gee, didn't anyone READ the article?). I'm not surprised that it isn't/is barely visible in the photo, a low-resolution "thumbnail" type photo typical of news pages. I'd like to see the original if it was any sharper. They also mentioned that the "meteor" was possibly only the size of a grain of sand, which would definitely make it smaller than one pixel in size on the photo, regardless of how sharp the original is. Aw, heck, it's more fun to just blame a liberal media, isn't it.
I had to go back and have another look, perhaps there was something in the photo I missed seeing. Sure enough. I missed seeing anything resembling a meteor. I agree with you Kim, amazing photo, no.
Have another look. See if you can't see it either... ;)
