Here's a good editorial from the Trib: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/opinion/52864660-82/mine-coal-blm-expansion.htm... ________________________________ From: "jcarman6@q.com" <jcarman6@q.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, December 4, 2011 3:05 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Alton Mine & Clear Views at NP's Even better, the link! Interesting article. It didn't mention the DEIS is out and is open to public review and hearings are being held now. It also appears that local support for the project is not at high as some might believe. Most of that power goes to California, and the rest is consumed in the west. I don't believe any of it goes to the Wasatch Front. ________________________________ From: "jcarman6@q.com" <jcarman6@q.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, December 4, 2011 1:01 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Alton Mine & Clear Views at NP's I'm having an Ahah! moment. The DEIS implies the coal produced by Alton would be shipped "out of state" but it is not made clear as to where it will go. Although I still see shipping to China as prohibitively expensive, anything is possible. They may need more coal than they can mine in their own country. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mat Hutchings (H USA)" <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, December 4, 2011 11:57:47 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Alton Mine & Clear Views at NP's Joan, the coal is transported to China, not the electricity. Again, I'm not positive about that, but thought I read it somewhere in this thread in the past. How is Alton (or anyone) going to transfer electricity across the Pacific Ocean to China? China is building its own coal fired power plants as fast as possible, with probably a tremendous abundance of nature resources available within their own country, as they haven't been burning coal like the rest of the industrialized world for centuries. Of course, those plants add to air pollution and the global warming problem. However, are you going to deny the Chinese people electricity? We in America can have it but you can't cause it adds to global warming? Opps, I forgot, we are in Utah and there is no such thing as global warming or air pollution (read sad laugh here) The real problem is balancing the demand for electricity and the form in which we produce it against the drain of natural resources and resultant pollution factors. This is not an easy task, for anyone. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mat Hutchings (H USA)" <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> To: "Utah Astronomy" <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, December 4, 2011 10:11:39 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Alton Mine & Clear Views at NP's Isn't the Alton mine destined to meet China's electrical demands? The Alton mine seems destined to meet California's insatiable appetite for electricity.
We spent a total of 10 weeks at te Grand Canyon over a 10 year period.
there were many days you couldn't get a clear picture of the canyon because of air pollution that had migrated from LA. Only after a good rain was the air really clear.
