I interviewed Fae Wray many years ago and she recalled her girlhood in Coppertown or one of the other towns that were gobbled up by the now Rio Tinto open pit mine. He first acting job came about because of the Dreseret News: she sold the most subscriptions and won the right to act in a little locally-produced movie. Also, Neal Cassidy, who is called Dean Morarity in Kerouac's On the Road, was born in Salt Lake City -- I seem to remember it was in a car, but wouldn't swear to it. In Lolita, Lo and Humbert Humbert are driving through southern Utah when she is hospitalized. While waiting to see her, Humbert reads the Deseret News. And don't forget Ed Abbey. -- Joe ------------------------------ On Tue, Jul 23, 2013 12:04 PM MDT william baker wrote:

Did anyone see the movie "Pearl Harbor"? The captain of the USS West Virginia, Mervin S Bennion, was mortally wounded when the Japanese struck on Dec 7th. Despite his wounds, he refused to leave the ship and continued to direct the battle/evacuation of the vessel. His grave is in the Salt Lake City Cemetary http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=8131613

That's very interesting, Joe!
Did you know that the first American pilot to shoot-down an enemy aircraft in combat lived his later years in Salt Lake, as a faculty member at the UofU, and is buried in the Salt Lake City cemetary? I located his grave some years ago; Glen Warchol wrote it up for the Tribune as a Memorial Day piece. He was flying as a volunteer for the French at the time of his victory in WWI, in the Lafayette Flying Corps, long before the US entered the war in 1917.

Did you know Burroughs wrote Maid of Mars when he was living in Salt Lake City?
