The most spectacular sun dogs that I've seen were while on a winter trip to Yellowstone NP. It was bitter cold, and there was a haze of ice crystals in the air, so the solar halo and sundogs were also very bright. The most interesting atmospheric phenomenon of this kind that I've seen was actually a bright lunar halo with "moondogs" and an upper tangential arc. Somewhere I have a 35mm slide of it, taken from RTMC near Big Bear about 12 years ago. If I can find it I'll post it to my gallery album.
