Tom Watson (no relation I don't suppose) and I were doing the "tap the tube" thing at the Wedge a few weeks ago and it worked great on objects at the edge of seeing. We were suprised when we looked at a planetary with a central star that was not visible until we looked to the side or jiggled the scope.
