One of several interesting aspects is that about every year an amateur rocket meet, lasting several days, is held on the salt flats -- no doubt with BLM permission. Dozens or hundreds of rockets are launched. Some are far heavier than a bowling ball. It's not unusual for them to reach extreme heights, and the parachutes sometimes fail, allowing them to plummet to earth at terminal velocity.
