Once out there on the dirt road I came upon a small burrowing owl who had bagged a baby jack rabbit almost as big as he was. He rested in my headlights completely unafraid. Then with a mighty effort he lifted off straight up 5 feet, moved down the road five feet and came down to a rest again on the road. Then after a short rest he did the hop again. I followed him for about half hour as he repeated this manuver over and over again. He was determined to drag that kill home and nothing was going to stop him. It just coasted in front of my truck for a bit and then flew off to the right. That's what I usually see for wildlife out there, aside from small rodents. The ONE time I got my wife to go out with me, we arrived just at dusk. A large owl buzzed past her as he swooped down and nabbed his dinner. She has since lost interest in going to Lakeside.

i'm pretty sure they were mule deer... grey with white rear end, tall ears, no antlers.

Clear Sky said it would clear up after midnight, and it did clear out some, but not much. It was way too windy, I didn't even bother to take the telescope out of the trunk, I was afraid it would blow over. I spent about 90 minutes watching shooting stars and lightning way off in the northeast. A large group of deer strolled through about 11:30, but that was really the most interesting thing that happened.
