Maybe we'd be visited by Alien Antropologists then? A vertiable Margret Meade of the Cosmos, a Como-Antropologist or EBE-ologist. We're an off-the-track little collection of mud huts that only grad-student anthropologists care about. Or worse: we're like a rookery of penguins in comparison to spacefaring species, not very different from one another and certainly not very smart. ________________________________ From: "erikhansen@TheBlueZone.net" <erikhansen@TheBlueZone.net> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tue, April 27, 2010 12:33:17 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Hawking vs ET - KSL this evening
Of course there are millions who claim to have had some sort of alien encounter, perhaps they are already here.
I think the other question has to be asked, even IF they find out we are
here, will they want to contact us?! By all accounts a species that could generate travel to the stars with their vast distances, they may view us and say after checking us out that we aren't ready, or we aren't advanced enough to have contact with them, and just go on by and ignore us. Perhaps they have a Star Trek First Contact policy or something similar and we just aren't at the point that they are going to really pay attention to us. Maybe, just maybe, despite our advances as a species, we just may need to grow up some more.

Our signals are already out there, so if they come near we will be discovered. Good news is that if they are out there the universe is so big, we are unlikely to be discovered. Our radio signals are still only a relatively small distance away in space. The speed of light is not only a good idea but it is the law. It seems humans will deplete their resources long before they realize intergalactic travel. Does anyone believe this will happen any time soon, IE next 2,000 years? I recall a statement, that all the energy produced by man so far would be incapable of accelerating a 1 gram particle to the speed of light.
He also based his conclusion and how Columbus treated Native Americans. It seems to me man has become somewhat less aggressive over 4 million years. More evolved creatures may be more benevolent. Man's history does not dictate all beings, it seems egocentric to assume all beings will be the same. Much like early assumptions that earth was the center of the universe.
It is all conjecture, hardly very scientific.
Hawkings conclusions seem to agree with plenty of sci-fi movies from the
past up to the present (like theTV-Show "V").

Y'all may have heard the Stephen Hawking is saying humans should not try to contact "ET".

I just heard from KSL radio (1160 on the am radio dial) that that'll be the topic of conversation during tonight's (Monday) 9:00 hour.
Tune and and give a listen. Better yet, call in and voice your opinion.
Cheers,
