Jay, I would recommend you use bubble wrap and a box. For my ETX-105, I made a box out of birch plywood for about $50 that works very well but for my LX-200 10", I purchased a JMI case but they are pricey. I tried the bungee cords this afternoon and they worked really well. The other item that worked well were the Assorted cable plastic ties, but I like how the bungee cords softness go against the tube and the mount so bungee it is until the day comes when I want to do a permanent mounts.
On a different note and I don't want to open another thread I have an XT 8 and XT 6 and a 2006 Nissan Altima. They fit in the trunk/back seat with the back seat down but in transporting them (I cannot afford a case for them until Jan or Feb) I usually wrap them up in a blanket so they don't bang around. Anyone have ideas until I get a case for each of them on the best way to transport them safely in a car?

Isn't a bungee cord a fashion statement? I think your telescope is quite fashionable Dan.
If it works is the most important. Each year at Riverside they give the Clifford T Holmes Award that recognizes people for finding atsronomical uses for common junk. Onetime Cliffford Holmes was picking up what some one dumped, at the roadside, because he found the junk useful in his ATM Hobby. The Highway Patrol did not believe his story and gave him a ticket for illegal dumping.

Ann:
This is a hobby. It's supposed to be fun. Find your own happiness and let others find their's if they can. How a telescope looks has nothing to do with what you can see in the eyepiece. We come together to share our views of the sky, not to make a fashion statment.

I highly recommend the bungee cord. The only downside is that I have had a few people at star parties ask about the cost of my telescope. It got me to wondering if the bungee cord looks cheap or tacky... But it works beautifully.
