My study of that war shows that the Armistice negotiations went through the Swiss government in September when the German military leaders felt the war was hopeless and loss, fearing a major breakthrough. President Wilson to whom the Swiss sent the negotiations and the Allies were pretty harsh in their terms so the Germans refused them. Then on October 29th the sailors of the German High Seas Fleet in Kiel mutinied, were successful and that revolution spread throughout Germany. On November 9th, the Kaiser abdicated and fled to the Netherlands and a new German Republic was created. Negotiations were swift and were concluded on the morning of November 11th, at 5:00a.m., with a cessation of hostilities/fighting to take place at 11:00a.m. So the time was more random than anything. However from primary documents of soliders on the front, intense shelling continued up to the deadline, and in many cases go after the deadline. If I remember right the last documented US solider to die was Pvt Gunther who died near Metz in an ambush rushing a German machine gun position with fixed bayonet at 11:01, being shot through the left temple according to General Pershing's order of the day. He was killed as the orders arrived to both sides to cease the hostilities. There is an Englishman and a Canadian killed right before 11:00a.m. also, and technically if the war ceased at 11:00a.m. then the Englishman was the last man "officially" killed during the Great War. The armistice was finally agreed at 5:00 AM on November 11, 1918, and the official time for it to become effective was set at 11:00 AM that same day. Does anyone know: Was the time of 11:00 simply a coincidence or was "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" simply an aesthetic decision?
