Unreplenished tails dissipate quickly, within hours or days. I remember comet McNaught. It had a huge, resonance-banded tail (visible only in the southern hemisphere in it's entirety) but all you could see in daytime from here was a bright coma. I think our only hope of seeing something is if a portion of the nucleus has survived perihelion, and it is at least somewhat active in retreat. Hopefully the clouds give us a break. Even if it is debris or if it continues to fall apart, couldn't this result in a spectacular tail over the coming days/weeks, even if there is no coma? Or is the thinking that it would be too dissipated by the time it becomes visible?
