That must have been fun, I wish I was around when that was happening. ________________________________ From: Patrick Wiggins <paw@wirelessbeehive.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, July 12, 2013 5:00 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Where were you 22 years ago today? I am assuming the trip down there was very memorable, For those of us who were not members of the Association at that time, but are now; what did it cost to charter a 737 to Mexico, and are there any plans to do anything like this in the foreseeable future?
It's been too long so I can't remember the numbers. Basically I went to the folks with the plane and said "Here's what I want to do, how much for the plane and how many seat in the plane?" We then divided the cost by the number of seats and then the broker handling the arrangements added a few dollars per seat for their fee. As you'll see below the cost worked out to about $500 per seat. On 11 Jul 2013, at 23:06, Joe Bauman wrote:
Patrick chartered it, and he was working for the planetarium at the time. But I don't remember that it was a planetarium trip -- I have the feeling it wasn't. -- Joe
Actually I give credit for the idea to Dr. Mark Littmann (the first and long time director of the late-great Hansen Planetarium). He chartered 1 (or maybe it was two) 727s to fly folks from SLC international up north to see the February 1979 eclipse from the air. So that's where I got the idea. That seemed like a great idea as the 1991 eclipse approached but I wanted to be on the ground for that one hence the landing near the centerline at La Paz. Here is a PDF of a couple of news releases from back then with more details: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/eclipse1991.pdf Clear skies (especially on 21 AUG 2017), patrick _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Send messages to the list to Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com The Utah-Astronomy mailing list is not affiliated with any astronomy club.
