I just heard an Internet broadcast in which Mike Brown (killer of Pluto, discoverer of the largest solar system object to be found in 150 years) say to forget about the tortured definition of planet that the astronomical union came up with. His idea is that there are eight massive objects orbiting the sun and millions of small objects. We call the big ones planets. From snowballs to dirty snowballs, to snowy dirtballs, to a rocks with ice on them, to dry rocks. There are still plenty of for sure comets and no mistake asteroids. We use different naming rules for comets and asteroids, but that's our problem not the fault of the bodies in questions.
The same applies to planets and non-planets, also globular clusters and the nuclei of captured dwarf galaxies. It's just tomatoes pronounced two different ways.
The names humans use make no difference to the underling reality.
