Wonderful Night but . . . .

Had a wonderful night out at Vernon, but all the sites on FR006 were gone by the time I got out there. It was extremely crowded by RV's with ATV's. I went to a back up site out there I have and had a great night. Joe, I looked at Venus but no sketch, but I can do that this coming week, same with M44. Anyway, I spent my time in Corvus and Virgo, then a little time in Hercules. Weather looks iffy through Monday but great for new moon on Tuesday and Wednesday so I am going to do a camp over on Tuesday, staying until Thursday morning. Thanks to Sky Tools 3 I have more than enough objects in Corvus, Leo, Virgo, Oph., Aquila, Hercules to keep me busy for the next two months. Also, the crowds are gone during the week. I noticed that and am going to blog about it this weekend on how my last outing last month at Pit n Pole one time on a Friday showed increase traffic out there with RVers and ATVers and the same in Vernon (during the summer months only). Seems as the population grows, the numbers in the summer are growing as well and some of our old quiet spots are not becoming that quiet on the weekends. Vernon though will stay good during the week and in fall, winter and spring. So IF anyone wants to join me on Tuesday or Wednesday let me know. If you need to borrow a tent I have that also. Car camping is wonderful. Your on your own for food and water since I have Celiac disease. -- Thanks! Jay

Getting a scope to Argentina

Brent, We have a similar but not as severe problem with packages coming to Tarawa. We have even had medical supplies intended for missionaries disappear. One of the "solutions" we use is to have new missionaries coming from the U.S. bring things with them when they come here. While this works fine for church approved missionary supplies, it might not be something the church would approve of for personal items. On the other hand, if anyone knew personally a new missionary going to Argentina, they might be willing to carry a small telescope as a favor. I brought an 80 mm Orion short tube with me and have really enjoyed it, although, as you know, I immediately got aperture fever and ordered an 8" Orion SkyQuest Dob from Australia. By the way, what you said about your finder books is true: they are still very useful from the equator. I am gradually becoming familiar with the southern skies. The Southern Cross, Eta Carina, and Alpha Centauri are all well up in the southern skies around 9 p.m. local time. It's unfortunate, however, that the school campus is so lit up at night. Like Joan said, it's good to know we can still be in touch via the internet. CLEAR SKIES to everyone. 2016 transit of Mercury

For those who may not have heard, Utah will have a transit of Mercury next year on 09 May. Info here: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/transit/catalog/MercuryCatalog.html Looks like we will miss ingress with the Sun rising with the transit already in progress. Egress will be early afternoon. patrick
