I’ve posted this album to Flickr. I have not cleaned up the photos and don’t have time to do so at the moment. What impressed me most about the eclipse was the difference in air temperature I felt at totality. My eclipse photos

http://smithplanet.com/archives/the-great-american-eclipse I'm thrilled with how well the photos came out. Feedback is very welcome. I used an 8" Newtonian telescope with a Canon T2i DSLR at prime focus and a Canon T5 with a 250mm IS telephoto lens. Both an an equatorial mount. Exposures were controlled and fully automated via Solar Eclipse Maestro - this is some amazing software. All I had to do was adjust the mount pointing occasionally to keep things centered and remove/replace the filters when prompted - it did all the work for both cameras capturing 326 photos with the correct ISO, exposure time, and mirror lock up settings. It was an incredible experience! I'm making plans for 2024 already. Jared Smith

Total Eclipse

Hi friends, Here's one of the photos I took of the total solar eclipse yesterday, from a site about 35 1/2 miles south of Donnelly Idaho. I used my old Nikon D-70 at ISO 200 and a zoom lens set to 400 mm. The photo was taken at 1/20 of a second, f/8, and the camera was hand-held. It was an awful drive home for sure. I-15 & highway 20 had many other roads feeding into it, as well. Just added to the mess. Thanks! On our way home, driving about 30 miles took nearly four hours. We were in narrow canyon country, one lane each way, with traffic stopped frequently or creeping along at a walk many other times. The problem was that many cars were backed up in another road that intersected ours (Idaho 55) and our route was closed so often to let them in that it was at a standstill much of the afternoon. I tried to switch off the engine when I could, but then everybody would creep forward five feet and I'd have to start up. Will post an eclipse picture soon. I've got hundreds of stills and hours of video to process, but have a couple just to share. Here's a link to a short Photobucket slideshow. What an experience, eh? I was awake for 36 hours, finally got to bed at midnight last night, and slept until noon! The only bad part was the drive home. Slow, bumper-to-bumper traffic from Thornton Idaho to Ogden Utah. We were in Casper and had perfect views and I was even able to use a beefy tracking mount from Sky Watcher vendor . Was trying to juggle photographing with naked eye viewing . Got some really good photos of Bailey's beads and Totality but the diamond ring was a naked eye. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen! The diamond sparkled like a hard diamond with lights bouncing all around inside and the band of the ring so thin just gorgeous! I didn't get a good photo of it but it's in my brain for good. Hope you all traveled home safely and had a great eclipse. Funny when trying to get my very well fitting Mr. Starguy filter off my 600 mm lens we bumped it and threw the the sun right out of the frame . But the other camera took up the slack. Things happen. On to 2024. Speakers at Astrocon were awesome. National Solar Observatory folks were at our hotel too so we talked tho them about their research. Best, Shoshana Ps the PST worked great!
